Artist Statement

I make art to satisfy my desire for an escape from the earthly restrictions our reality places upon us. My pieces represent windows into another space, unfamiliar and unreachable, blending the boundaries between dimensions.

Using line I create topographical images along a two-dimensional plane, then contort the plane to create sculptural pieces, furniture, and wearable art. During this process, I let the contours come organically. Often I begin only with a framework or general dimensions in mind and an initial line to jump off from, and then bend each successive line so that it barely connects to the previous one.

I enjoy working with steel as it affords me the strength and versatility needed to fulfill my design specifications, whether welded, soldered, or cold-connected. It is widely available, moderately priced, and long-lasting when sealed correctly. Because of this ubiquitous nature, when a piece is created in steel it becomes more relatable to the viewer. It is a material that has permeated our culture and society, and thus gives any piece a sense of identifiable visual weight without needing to handle it.

There is a great deal of precedent in art history of drawing in space with wire or line, from Antony Gormley’s figurative sculptures to Gianni Colombo’s kinetic artworks. I intend to carry these methods forward in my own art as I push the limits of dimensional illusion.
